Cecil Campbell's Tennessee Ramblers

Well I figured since I'm posting Dick Hartman's Tennessee Ramblers then it might be a good time to post some Cecil Campbell's Tennessee Ramblers as well. Cecil Campbell Was the original steel guitar player for the Tennessee Ramblers but officially became leader of the group in 1945. Campbell with the Tennessee Ramblers continued recording up until the late 1950s even throwing in a little rockabilly now and then. I don't have many songs but here's what I have so far. enjoy..

-------------
 1. Beaty Steel Blues (Cecil Campbell's Tennessee Ramblers)               (2:40)
 2. Cambell's Steel Guitar Special (Cecil Campbell's Tennessee Ramblers)  (2:40)

Dick Hartman's Tennessee Ramblers

This is basically a repost of songs from the 78s Mix postings. I thought it would be a nice to give them their own posting and download. Dick Hartman of Hartman's Heartbreakers & the Washboard Wonders fame first group was the Tennessee Ramblers. The Tennessee Ramblers got their start a few years prior the emergence of Western Swing "1928" and started off as more or less a stringband. As the years went by, they as many other bands of the time were influenced by the popularity of Hollywood western movies and eased into a more Western Swing style sound by the early 1930s. In 1937 Hartman left the group and the Tennessee Ramblers reformed under the leadership of Steel Guitar player Cecil Campbell.

Track Listing
-------------
 1. A Fiddlers' Contest (The Tennessee Ramblers)                  (2:51)
 2. Carry Me Back To Carolina (Tennessee Ramblers)                (2:54)
 3. Doug Ain't Doin' The Jitterbug (Tennessee Ramblers)           (2:33)
 4. I Love Hawaii (Tennessee Ramblers)                            (2:37)
 5. Oh Mary, Don't You Weep (Tennessee Ramblers)                  (2:47)
 6. Satisfied (The Tennessee Ramblers)                            (2:32)
 7. Sweet Mamma, Tree Top Tall (Tennessee Ramblers)               (2:19)

Western Swing Roots 3 - Jug/ Washboard Bands

Photobucket
Washboard Rhythm Kings

This is an improved repost of the original posted back in 2008. The download had disappeared for what ever reason and I hadn't created a printed song list back then so I had to put together a new mix of songs. The songs in the download are different from the original post so worth downloading for those of you who got the first set. I also added an addition download of jug/washboard influenced Western Swing bands.

Jug and Washboard music is another sample of rural music that like western Swing was influenced by Jazz and Blues. The tradition of Jug and Washboard bands is that if you can't afford to buy a musical instrument, you make it yer self. The influence of washboard music on Western Swing can be heard in songs like "Call Of The Freaks" also known as "Garbage Man Blues" which was originaly recorded by the Washboard Rhythm Kings then covered by Milton Brown's Musical Brownies, to the instruments themselves. The washboard was used by a few early Western Swing bands like Bob Skyles & His Skyrockets, the Washboard Wonders, the Prairie ramblers, and Texas Jim Lewis.

Here is a sampling of 18 songs with that crazy jug/washboard sound;

Track Listing
-------------
1. If I could Be With You (Alabama Washboard Stompers)    (2:36)
2. St Louis Blues (Alabama Washboard Stompers)      (3:02)
3. Red River Blues (Clarence Williams Washboard 5)       (3:09)
4. Sugar Blues (Dallas String Band)       (3:09)
5. Shim Shaming (Eddy Kelly's Washboard Band)       (3:08)
6. Sadie Green, the Vamp of New Orleans (take 1) (Five Harmaniacs)     (2:56)
7. Farewell Blues (Georgia Washboard Stompers)      (2:24)
8. I Can't Dance (I Got Ants In My Pants) (Georgia Washboard Stompers)      (2:57)
9. Lonesome Blues (Henry Williams & Eddie Anthony)       (2:53)
10. Baby Please Don't Go (Joe Williams' Washboard Blues Singers)     (3:25)
11. Lonesome Grave Took My Baby (Mississippi Shieks)      (3:18)
12. Memphis Blues (Mobile Strugglers)         (2:53)
13. Old Joe (Nashville Washboard Band)        (2:05)
14. Dinah (Scorpion Washboard Band)      (3:06)
15. Boot It Boy (1929) (Tampa Red's Hokum Jug Band)       (2:55)

18. Call of The Freaks (Washboard Rhythm Kings)      (3:02)

WKCR Western Swing Festival

Beginning on Friday, March 25th at 8:00 a.m., WKCR will honor the legacy of Western Swing with 64 hours of continuous programming, running until midnight on Sunday, March 27th (this will preempt all regularly scheduled programming). We will explore the genre's entire history, from its roots in the 1920s and 1930s to bands still performing today. The festival will also include live performances and interviews with several Western Swing experts. Grab your ten-gallon hat, lace up those dancin' boots, and come swing with us!
An outgrowth principally of jazz, country, and western music, "Western Swing" became enormously popular in Southern California and Texas during the 1930s and 1940s. Adopting swing rhythms and "hot jazz" orchestration styles, Milton Brown, Bob Wills, and dozens of other bandleaders brought large ensembles to bandstands and equally large crowds to dance halls across the Southwest. These musical pioneers helped steer country music in an entirely new direction, and had a profound influence on later styles of American music such as rockabilly and rock and roll.
