Sample Song - "Farewell Blues"Clayton McMichen was one of western swing's grand old time fiddlers. He was born into a musical family in Georgia and started playing fiddle at 11. In 1922 he and his string band the Home Town Boys started playing regular radio shows for Atlanta's fist radio station WSB. In 1923 Clayton won a fiddle contest that earned him the nickname "The North Georgia Wildcat". From 1926 - 1930 Clayton played fiddle with country blues legends Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers. In 1931 Clayton formed the Georgia Wildcats adding a jazz influence to his music but not entirely to his fiddle playing. Here are the only 9 sides I have so far out of the 45 or so sides that they recorded between 1937 - 39. I've added 3 songs of Slim Bryant & His Wilcats to the set. Slim played guitar with the Georgia Wildcats from 37-38 and had quite a successful musical career lasting into 1960s.
Here is a link to an interesting article and interview with Slim in 2002. An yes he's still kicking today at 98 years old. "Update" Slim is the only surviving musician to record with country legend Jimmie Rodgers - Thanks to Nolan Porterfield for this added info.

I am having trouble downloading the Georgia Wildcats tracks. Are they still available? Thanks so much for a great resource!
Ok, I re-uploaded the file. Should be fine now. Thanks For letting me know :-)
Wow!!! Endless thanks...
Your post says that The Georgia Wildcats were formed in '37. I've got a 78 by Clayton McMichen & His Georgia Wildcats (Varsity 5011) Ida Red , Give the Fiddler A Dram from 1932. I have'nt listened to the download yet, but the baby- faced kid in the picture with McMichen's hand on his shoulder is Merle Travis who joined the Wildcats in '36 or "37 at the age of 17. I know he does lead vocal on "Please Don't Sell My Pappy No More Rum.

I cannot find Clayton McMichen's theme son, South, on any recording available. Anyone know where it can be found? Actually, I would take any artist doing it.
Jane S.
Hi Jane, I'm so sorry I took so long to answer your request. I made a mental note to get the song for you and then forgot. I don't have the McMichen version but I did find 12 others. Here's a link to download the zip file with all 12 songs.
