Howdy folks

The MP3s available on this blog are from collections of western swing 78s and out-of-print LPs donated by a small group of devoted collectors. Our main purpose is to share and introduce to others this great and mostly unknown music. Here at WS on 78 we try not to post music that's available for purchase. So please don't request any CDs. And please support the Western Swing music labels by purchasing their CDs. Most barely make enough money to make their next release.
All downloads are compiled as ZIP or RAR files and need to extracted with Winzip, Winrar or any similar software.

Johnnie Lee Wills - Schmitt Transcriptions

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Johnnie Lee was one of 4 musical brothers in the Wills family to have his own band, each with their own style. Bob was the oldest of the musical Wills brothers followed by Johnnie, Billy Jack and Luke. Johnnie Lee's style was a sound somewhere between Bob's swing pop and Billy Jack's rockin' R&B. As a musical style western swing was know for blending blues, jazz, R&B, with country where bands covered songs from each genre. Johnnie Lee's first hit Rag Mop was one of the first western swing songs to actually be covered by R&B groups. These recordings of full radio shows from the Schmitt transcriptions were recorded between 1950 and 1952, "Sorry no Junior Barnard". The shows are numbered in order with the dates in the comment tag line. I don't have all the shows so that's the reason for the skipped numbers. Here are shows 1-2, 9-16 out of 37 shows total.

I've tried to download this four times and everytime I get the error message about there being a problem with the rar file that it cannot be read.
I managed to get part of it with a download client - Fresh Download - but that's the best I've got.
I've tried with Mozilla, IE and Firefox - everytime it's failed.
Any ideas?
I really would love to hear this stuff! :)

That's strange. I tried and it downloaded and extracted fine. Have you had other problems with my other downloads? When do you get the error message, while downloading or extracting? Don't worry, we'll find a way to get you this file :-) email me at westernswing78@gmail.com

I get the error message part-way through the download, after which the download window exits and nothing is saved.

Apart from when I used Fresh Download which kept the 10MB I'd got in spite of an error message from WinRar which complained about an unexpected end of archive.

Evereything else has downloaded fine.

I'll try it once more after a reboot and then possibly email you depending on the degree of success I have!

Well, using Mozilla I've just downloaded a rar file of 43.7 Mb. I went to WinRar and got two error messages. One tells me that CRC failed and that the file Program 14.mp3 is corrupt. The other tells me that there's an unexpected end of archive.
I've unpacked it and I have shows 1,2,9 to 13 and 15.
Strange.
I'll email you later if that's OK.

I tried unpacking the archive with 7Zip which is suppoosed to handle CRC problems well and it informed me that file 14 was "broken".
I'm guessing that as two different programs identified a problem with the same file that there may be a problem with that file ;)
Onwards and uipwards with the learning curve!

The file is fine. Everyone else I've asked says they get it fine. My guess is somehow you are losing parts during the download. Have you tried any of the other downloads from here to see if it's a transfer problem?

I downloaded another of your excellent posts and it arrived OK.
Strangely, the corrupt file I mentioned was unpacked by 7Zip and sounds OK.
I'm guessing that the CRC indicates some very minor discrepancy in the checksum of that particular file caused by something lost in the download. It's only happened to me once before - and that was with a totally different file from a totally different source.
Whatever, I thank you once again for this and your other great posts.
I just wish I could reciprocate, but I haven't any old 78s to rip!
Meanwhile, I'll just recommend this to all lovers of Western Swing:

It's brilliant!

Correction - for the Jimmie Rivers album, the URL should be:
