Howdy folks

The MP3s available for download on this blog are from collections of western swing 78s and Radio Transcriptions donated by a small group of devoted collectors. Our main purpose is to share and introduce to others this great and mostly unknown music. Here at WS on 78 we try not to post music that's available for purchase. So please don't request any CDs. And please support the Western Swing music labels by purchasing their CDs.
All downloads are free and compiled as ZIP or RAR files and need to extracted with Winzip, Winrar or any similar software.

Bill Cason's Arkansas Troopers - Radio Transcriptions

This here's a full 45 minute radio show of Bill Cason's Arkansas Troopers recorded in 1952-53 at possibly radio station WWL New Orleans. I don't have much info on either the band or the recording so I'll post any updates I can dig up. I believe Bill Cason recorded on the Coral label in the 50s and the steel guitarist is the great but sadly unknown Johnny Bonvillian. This is the first of two shows we will be sharing. If I was to compare Cason's band to any other of the time I guess Billy Jack Wills & His Western Swing Band would be about right.
I'm not sure of the original source of these transcriptions. They've been handed down a few times. Thank you who ever you are!

Thanks for these -- it's great to hear Johnny Bonvillian at his best. One of the first interviews I ever did was with Tom Morrell and he raved about Johnny. Johnny sounds great here, though not innovative or anything; he clearly loved Joaquin Murphey's playing and that's the style he played. But he sure sounds great. I wonder who the rest of the band is? Sounds like one of the vocalists is Joe Martin, and the drummer may be Victor Chaplin (?). Not sure about the lead guitar player or the rest. Cason cut some Nashville sessions for Coral and Johnny Bonvillian is on those. Cason also cut some stuff when he was still in Arkansas. Fiddlin' Red Herron was also in his band in New Orleans for a while -- it's a shame that Red isn't on these airchecks, too. Anyway, thanks again. It's great to hear these -- I look forward to more. I tried to write Bonvillian a few years ago, but I never heard back. Oh well...
